The Pre-Apprentice Scholarships provide 11 annual scholarships of $1,000 each.
Introduced in 2008, the Pre-Apprentice Scholarships were designed to encourage those completing pre-apprenticeship training programs to continue in the trades and complete their apprenticeship training.
Funds are donated by industry and matched by the Alberta Access to the Future Fund.
For more information about the donors to the scholarship fund, see the list of Scholarship Donors.
Applications for the Pre-Apprenticeship Scholarships are now available. Click here to access the application.
Be sure to complete it fully. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application deadline June 29, 2012.
To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must
To be considered for a Pre-Apprentice Scholarship, an Employer Recommendation form must be completed and attached to the application or mailed in separately by the application deadline. Applicants must include one or two paragraphs describing themselves, including details such topics as what you learned in your pre-apprenticeship training, why you have chosen a career in the trades and how this scholarship will benefit you.
Apprentices must attend technical training in order to receive their scholarship cheque. Apprentices who chose to challenge the Apprenticeship and Industry Training exam will not be eligible for payment. Only technical training that is part of a regular Alberta apprenticeship program will be recognized for payment of scholarship awards. Click here to view the class schedule to determine if your technical training is eligible.
Cheques will be available to scholarship recipients when their attendance at the next period of technical training is confirmed by sending in the confirmation of enrollment form to Alberta Scholarship Programs. Scholarship recipients will be informed of when and how to obtain their cheques when they receive their letter from Alberta Scholarship Programs.
A committee established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board selects the scholarship recipients. The recipients will be selected on the basis of their marks, employer recommendation, description about themselves and, for select scholarships, financial need. The Pre-Apprentice Scholarships are awarded on a competitive selection basis.
Applicants will be notified of the status of their applications by November 30, 2012.
Apprentices will only be selected for a maximum of one scholarship each year within the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Family of Scholarships, which includes:
