SCHOLARSHIPS FOR RAP/CTS Students

Half-million dollars in apprenticeship scholarships to enhance career options

Students participating in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) or who have completed a Career and Technologies Studies (CTS) apprenticeship pathway may be eligible for one of the 500 RAP/CTS Scholarships of $1,000 each.

$ Graduate All students who will have graduated from high school in June 2012 or earlier, are registered apprentices or plan to continue their apprenticeship training after graduation are invited to apply. Apprentices who apply for the RAP/CTS scholarship must have at least one period of technical training remaining in order to claim the scholarship.

RAP/CTS Scholarships are designed to recognize the accomplishments of Alberta high school students participating in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) or who have completed a Career and Technologies Studies (CTS) apprenticeship pathway and to encourage students to continue their apprenticeship training after completing high school.

The funds for the scholarships are provided from a joint investment of contributions from the private sector and the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a RAP/CTS Scholarship,

RAP students must:

be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, and a resident of Alberta as defined by Alberta Scholarship Programs,
have completed the requirements for a high school diploma in 2011 or earlier,
be registered as an Alberta apprentice in a trade while still attending high school,
have completed a minimum of 250 hours of on-the-job training and work experience in your trade,
be continuing in an approved regular apprenticeship program,
have NOT been awarded a RAP Scholarship previously, and
have at least one period of technical training remaining.

To be considered for an award, your application must be supported by:

two or three paragraphs, written or typed, telling us about yourself, confirming your plans to continue your apprenticeship program and why a career in your trade is a 'good fit' for you,
a completed employer recommendation form, and
a recommendation letter from a high school teacher or counselor.

CTS apprenticeship pathway students must:

be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, and a resident of Alberta as defined by Alberta Scholarship Programs,
be a registered Alberta apprentice or plan to register within 12 months,
have completed the requirements for high school graduation in 2012 or earlier,
have completed one of the five apprenticeship pathways, (i.e. automotive service technician, carpenter, cook, hairstylist, welder),
have at least one period of technical training remaining, and
have NOT been awarded a RAP Scholarship previously.

To be considered for an award, your application must be supported by:

two or three paragraphs, written or typed, telling us about yourself, confirming your plans to continue your apprenticeship program and why a career in your trade is a 'good fit' for you,
a certified copy of your Record of Courses Completed form provided by your supervising teacher. This form must be completed and signed by your teacher, principal and journeyperson instructor.

Hairstylists please note: to receive your scholarship cheque you must attend apprenticeship training at one of the two approved training providers in Alberta. The approved providers are: Eveline Charles Academy in Edmonton or Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics in Calgary. Attendance at other institutions will not be considered for payment.

Apprentices must attend technical training in order to receive their scholarship cheque. Apprentices who chose to challenge the Apprenticeship and Industry Training exam will not be eligible for payment. Only technical training that is part of a regular Alberta apprenticeship program will be recognized for payment of scholarship awards. Selection

Selection of scholarship recipients is made by a committee established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.

Recipients will be selected on the basis of their employer recommendation, high school recommendation, marks and short description of themselves.

Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by November 30, 2012.

Apprentices will only be selected for a maximum of one scholarship each year within the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Family of Scholarships, which includes:

Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training scholarships
Registered Apprentice Program (RAP) scholarships
Pre-Apprentice scholarships
Top Apprentice scholarships
